Job Title: Group Teacher
Reports To: Center Director
Status: Level II (Exempt)
Description:
Responsible for managing the daily needs of a designated group of children and the implementation of the curriculum while managing the assistant(s) assigned to your classroom.
Qualifications/Requirements:
A successful Group Teacher must be able to adequately perform each essential duty, have the ability to successfully function in a team environment and have the following education and experience:
- He/She is licensed by the City Board of Education as a teacher in early childhood classes and has completed at least 150 clock hours of observation and supervised practice teaching in pre-kindergarten or kindergarten grades or;
- He/She has been certified by the State Education Department as a teacher in the field of early childhood education prior to September 1966; or
- He/She is eligible for certification by the State Education Department for teaching in early childhood grades and upper elementary grades if his/her professional study in education includes:
- Completion of 300 clock hours of observation and supervised practice teaching, of which at least 150 clock hours shall be in pre-kindergarten or kindergarten grades, and
- Thirty semester hours of study in professional education which includes at least the following:
- A one-semester course in the sociological, philosophical, or historical foundations of education, and
- Two one-semester courses in educational developmental psychology, at least one of which shall be in child development and
- Three one-semester courses in instructional methods of materials including instructions in teaching the basic skills, at least one of which shall be on the pre-kindergarten or kindergarten level and
- A one semester course in parent education and community relations; or
- He/she has been certified by another public or private certifying agency whose standards are equivalent to those specified in paragraph © of this subdivision; or
- He/she has a plan for meeting the requirements specified in paragraph (i), (ii), or (iii) of this subdivision within a reasonable tie and has obtained approval of this plan by an accredited college approved by the State of New York. In such Case he/she shall submit to the Department a letter indicating the time necessary for the completion of the training.
- In reviewing the qualifications of a person placed in charge of a group of children, the Department may accept letters of other appropriate certifications from accredited teacher training schools approved by the State Education Department certifying that such person has met specific course requirements set by this subsection.
Essential Duties:
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Ensures that the children are supervised at ALL times.
- Acts as a center liaison addressing problems and answering questions regarding the children.
- Manages the Assistant Teacher assigned to the classroom(s).
- Creates a stimulating environment for the child by conducting developmentally appropriate activities in accordance with the established.
- Interacts with and provides guidance and care to all children within the center.
- Changes diapers and/or assists children with their toilet needs while adhering to hand washing procedures.
- Greets each child and parent upon arrival at the center.
- Encourages classroom participation and positive interaction with other children.
- Redirects undesirable behavior to promote positive socialization.
- Responds to children’s verbal and nonverbal indications of need and/or requests.
- Conducts oneself and represents BSA in a positive manner which includes showing respect for co-workers, parents and superiors.
- Understands the chain of command and accepts criticism and suggestions as an opportunity to improve.
- Ensures appropriate set-up and shut-down of classroom on a daily basis.
- Provides exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers.
- Other duties as assigned.
