Preschoolers Celebrate Read Across America Week

Preschoolers Celebrate Read Across America Week

Each year in March the National Education Association's Read Across America initiative motivates teachers and parents to celebrate the importance of reading with their children. On March 2, the anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, educators strive to create a fun, reading-themed day for kids nationwide.

This year Brightside Academy joined in on the celebration by hosting reading events and activities throughout our academies in NY, OH and PA. Cat in the Hat themed crafts, reading games, and staff dressing up as the beloved character added to the fun.

In Philadelphia author/illustrator Cynthia Kreilick visited our preschool class at 48th & Brown to read her book, "Baker Bear Bakes a Cake." Following the story, the kids and author delighted themselves in decorating cupcakes. The children were thrilled with the visit. Brightside Academy purchased ten copies of Kreilick’s book to distribute among the city’s academies.

The Downtown Pittsburgh academies collaborated with local sports teams for a unique spin to Read Across America. After story time, The Steel City Yellow Jackets (ABA basketball team) distributed spirit towels to the 415 Smithfield preschoolers and the Robert Morris University Women's Volleyball Team gifted RMU souvenir hockey sticks to the kids at 925 Liberty.

Research studies show that children do better in school when they are motivated to read. Brightside Academy’s Pittsburgh region is currently working on getting our school-age children excited about reading through Washington Wild Things’s (professional baseball team - Frontier League) 2017 Reading Club. Teachers will set reading goals and when the school-age kids meet their goals, they will receive a free ticket to a Wild Things game!

As part of Read Across America for the second year in a row, Brightside Academy is also holding a reading contest #BrightsideAcademyFamilyLiteracy encouraging families to share photos reading with their children for a chance to win one of four Dr. Seuss book sets. Visit our Facebook page to find out more about the contest!

Reading is fundamental to help children succeed in school. Brightside Academy thanks our community partners for helping us make Read Across America Week 2017 extra special for our kids.
